Coastal Monitoring: Offshore Bethany Beach, Delaware
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers: Philadelphia District
In 1988 several pieces of artillery shells were discovered on Bethany Beach and Sea Colony Beach in Delaware. A recent beach replenishment project used sand recovered from a borrow area within the bounds of a historic anti-aircraft target range operated by the U.S. Army in the 1950’s and later by the Delaware National Guard until 1974. Ocean Surveys performed a USACE required detailed geophysical survey of the borrow area in order to minimize the potential for encountering artillery shells during future dredge activities.
